Nifty hits 26,100: What’s driving the stock market rally?

Indian stock markets surged on Monday, with Sensex and Nifty hitting strong gains, led by IT, metal, and auto sectors amid year-end momentum and foreign investment inflows.

A wave of joy swept through Dalal Street. The first day of the week saw momentum in Indian stock market indices. Nifty finished its run above 26,100. The IT, metal and auto sectors showed momentum on this day.

On Monday, December 22, Sensex closed at 85,567.48 points, up 638.12 points. Meanwhile, Nifty 50 rose 206 points, closing at 26,172.40 points.

According to media reports, Vinod Nair, Research Head at Geojit Investment Limited, said year-end momentum was seen in the market. Momentum was witnessed in various stock markets across the world on this day. The market gained momentum, thinking that the US Fed might provide more relief in 2026.

He said foreign investment has come in. That's why IT and metal gained momentum. Gold prices have already touched record highs again. According to Vinod Nair, investors are now waiting for third quarter GDP figures. Even if everything else remains fine, he says one needs to keep a watchful eye on trade agreements, geopolitical turmoil and crude oil price fluctuations.

Where was the growth?

Growth was seen in the Bank Nifty and Midcap Nifty indices on this day. Several stocks gave substantial returns on this day.

These include Trent (3.56% growth), Shriram Finance (3.68% growth), Mazagon Dock Ship (5.67% growth), Solar Industries (5.95% growth), Wipro (3.11% growth), Infosys (3.11% growth), and Hindustan Zinc (3.01% growth). Besides, stocks like IRFC, Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra, and Adani Energy saw price increases.

Despite the market rise, several stocks took a hit on this day. These include Siemens Energy India, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company, State Bank of India, and Kotak Mahindra Bank.
