Australia stunned Turkey 2-0 in their opening Group D match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, securing a crucial victory at BC Place in Vancouver. The Socceroos delivered a disciplined performance, making the most of their chances despite spending much of the game defending against a Turkish side that dominated possession.
Turkey started brightly and controlled the tempo, creating several opportunities in the first half. However, Australia’s defence stood firm, with goalkeeper Patrick Beach making a series of important saves to keep the score level. The Socceroos then struck on the counterattack in the 27th minute.
Irankunda puts Socceroos ahead
Australia took the lead through rising star Nestory Irankunda, who finished calmly after being set up by Paul Okon-Engstler. The goal rewarded Australia’s patient approach and gave them a valuable advantage against one of the tournament’s dark horses.

Turkey continued to push forward after falling behind. Led by Arda Guler, they enjoyed long spells of possession and looked for a way back into the match. However, Australia remained organised at the back and limited Turkey to few clear-cut opportunities.
Metcalfe seals the victory
The decisive moment arrived in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe doubled Australia’s lead. His well-taken strike put the result beyond doubt and completed a memorable victory for the Socceroos.

For Turkey, the defeat is a disappointing beginning to their return to the World Cup stage. Despite controlling possession for large parts of the contest, they were unable to break through Australia’s defence and now face pressure to respond in their next group-stage fixture.
Australia will next face the United States in a key Group D clash, while Turkey will look to revive their campaign against Paraguay. With three points already secured, the Socceroos have taken a significant step toward reaching the knockout rounds.
