Cabo Verde announced their arrival on football’s biggest stage with a memorable performance, holding former world champions Spain to a goalless draw in a stunning FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H encounter at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Making their first-ever appearance at the World Cup, the African nation delivered one of the tournament's earliest shocks by frustrating a star-studded Spanish side and earning a historic first point.

Despite Spain dominating possession and creating several opportunities, Cabo Verde’s disciplined defensive structure and outstanding goalkeeping proved impossible to break down.

Vozinha emerges as Cabo Verde's hero

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha was the standout performer throughout the match.

Spain repeatedly threatened to open the scoring, but the experienced shot-stopper produced a string of impressive saves to deny La Roja.

The Spaniards controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, but Cabo Verde defended bravely and remained organised under constant pressure.

Vozinha was particularly impressive in the first half, keeping his side alive with several crucial interventions as Spain searched for an early breakthrough.

The European giants continued to pile on the pressure, but their finishing lacked precision throughout the contest.

Manager Luis de la Fuente attempted to inject fresh energy into the attack by introducing teenage sensation Lamine Yamal after the 70-minute mark.

Even with additional attacking options, Spain failed to find a way past Cabo Verde's resilient defence.

Blue Sharks script World Cup history

For Cabo Verde, the result represents a landmark moment in the nation's footballing history.

The Blue Sharks not only secured their first point at a FIFA World Cup but also demonstrated that they can compete with some of the biggest names in international football.

Holding a team of Spain's calibre in their tournament debut will undoubtedly boost confidence ahead of their remaining group-stage fixtures.

Meanwhile, Spain will view the result as two points dropped as they seek to establish themselves among the favourites for the title.
