Bengaluru's ambitious suburban rail project is moving closer to reality, with the first train expected to begin operations in 2027. Designed to ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility, the network will initially deploy three-coach trains capable of carrying around 900 to 1,000 passengers.
Officials say the shorter train configuration will allow services to run at frequencies as low as five minutes, significantly reducing waiting times for commuters across the city.
High-frequency services planned
According to project officials, three-coach trains have been chosen for the initial phase to maximise service frequency. Running shorter trains will enable intervals of about five minutes, compared to the 15–20-minute gaps that could occur with longer train sets under current operational constraints, per a report by News18.

Each train is expected to accommodate between 900 and 1,000 passengers, with substantial seating capacity for daily commuters.
First phase to begin on Mallige corridor
The initial operations are expected to commence on the Mallige Corridor, connecting Benniganahalli and Chikkabanavara. Construction work on key sections of the corridor is progressing, with the route forming a crucial part of Bengaluru's broader suburban rail vision.
The corridor is currently targeted for completion in 2027 after project timelines were revised.

According to News18, officials have indicated that the network could eventually expand significantly, with provisions for larger train formations and additional coaches.
Boost for Bengaluru commuters
The suburban rail project is expected to complement Bengaluru's Metro network and provide an alternative for long-distance daily commuters. By connecting key residential, commercial and industrial areas, the system aims to reduce dependence on road transport and ease traffic congestion across the city.
With frequent services, higher passenger capacity and multimodal integration, the project is being seen as a major step toward transforming Bengaluru's public transportation infrastructure.
