Delhi Police have identified more than 2,500 people with criminal backgrounds through a facial recognition system (FRS) deployed around the protest site at Jantar Mantar.

The surveillance setup has been installed amid protest-related security arrangements in central Delhi and, police sources said, is designed to help officers spot people whose records already exist in police databases.

FRS deployment and real-time monitoring

Police sources said four FRS units have been placed at key entry and exit points around the venue and are linked to the Delhi Police database.

The system is being monitored in real time, allowing officers to verify identities quickly and alert the relevant unit if a match is found.

A senior officer told PTI that once a face is captured, it is matched with the database within seconds, enabling immediate action in cases involving wanted or absconding accused persons.

Who the system is targeting

“The technology has so far helped identify over 2,500 persons with criminal antecedents,” a police source said.

The system is not aimed at ordinary protesters but at wanted criminals, absconders, history sheeters and “bad characters” who may try to use a large gathering to create law and order problems.

Police also said the cameras are high-resolution and can capture faces from a distance, making the deployment a preventive as well as investigative tool.

Tried, tested and back on duty

Officials said the facial recognition deployment is meant to strengthen security without causing inconvenience to peaceful demonstrators.

Police added that the technology can help identify habitual offenders who have repeatedly figured in criminal cases and are listed in Delhi Police records.

The force has used similar FRS deployments during major public events in the city before, including Republic Day, Independence Day, Holi, Diwali, Eid and Ramlila celebrations, officials said.
