The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday called off its protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar after the Centre agreed to withdraw all cases against student protesters and take up its other demands, including compensation for families affected by the NEET paper leak row.

The decision came after a joint press conference attended by Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, along with CJP spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das.

The protest had continued for 37 days, and the group said it was ending the agitation “in good faith” after three rounds of talks with the government delegation.

The bargain begins to take shape

The announcement followed the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as Union education minister, which the CJP had identified as its core demand from the beginning.

The protest had three main demands: Pradhan’s resignation, withdrawal of all legal cases and FIRs against protesters and organisers, and compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of those who died by suicide after the NEET paper leak.

In the joint briefing, JP Nadda said that copies of the FIRs filed so far would be shared with the CJP and that “no action will be taken”, while also saying compensation would be provided “according to the rules and regulations; whatever maximum will be possible will be given to them”.

With terms upon the table

Saurav Das said, “We urge all protesters to go home, as the government has accepted our demands,” while Ashutosh Ranka told the press conference that the group had accepted the settlement “in good faith” after discussions with the Centre.

Das also said the group had demanded Rs 1 crore for families of NEET victims and that the government had agreed to give “honourary compensation” within the framework of existing rules and regulations.

The CJP also placed a five-point charter before the government, which it said concerned broader education and exam reforms.

One chapter closes, another awaits

The withdrawal of the protest came after weeks of demonstrations at Jantar Mantar that had drawn large crowds and triggered traffic diversions and Metro station closures in central Delhi.

The group said it would meet the government again in about four weeks to discuss its charter of reform demands further.

The Centre’s acceptance of the protest’s core points brought an end to one of the more visible student demonstrations linked to the NEET controversy, with the immediate focus now shifting to the promised withdrawal of FIRs and the process for compensation.
