Cyclone Ditwah forms over Bay of Bengal: When and where is landfall? All you need to know

A cyclonic storm named Ditwah is developing in the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lanka coast, shortly after the weakening of the Senyar storm.

Concern is growing over a new cyclonic storm named Ditwah, which is forming right after the weakening of the Senyar storm. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this new system is expected to move northwestwards along the Sri Lanka coast and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal.

Cyclone Ditwah is likely to have a widespread impact, with effects expected on 30 November across multiple states, including Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The prevailing atmospheric conditions may bring heavy to very heavy rainfall until 30 November.

Where is Ditwah now?

IMD said in a post on X, Cyclone Ditwah “with the speed of 8 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 2330 hrs IST of yesterday’s, the 27th November 2025 over the same region, near latitude 7.9°N and longitude 81.3°E, about 8 km northwest of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 80 km south of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 200 km north-northeast of Hambantota (Sri Lanka), 480 km south-southeast of Puducherry (India) and 580 km south-southeast of Chennai (India).”

IMD has warned of isolated, extremely heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu today and tomorrow.

Predicting the storm’s impact, IMD stated in its latest release: “Under the influence of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast, heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Tamil Nadu during 27th- 30th November with isolated extremely heavy falls on 28th & 29th November.”

Several districts in Tamil Nadu: Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Thoothukkudi, Tirunelveli- are under an orange alert for heavy rains. Sivaganga, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar will be under a yellow alert tomorrow.

Meanwhile, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema may receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall till 2 December.

In Kerala, IMD has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall on 30 November, along with isolated heavy rainfall expected until 29 November. Telangana is likely to see heavy rain on 30 November and 1 December, while South Interior Karnataka may experience heavy rainfall on 29 November. Thunderstorm and lightning warnings are in place for all the above-mentioned states.
