The National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW), will organise district-level ‘Mahila Jan Sunwai’ public hearings across Nagaland from March 9 to March 13, officials said.

The hearings are intended to provide women with a direct platform to raise complaints and seek support from authorities.

Addressing a press conference in Kohima, NSCW chairperson W Nginyeih Konyak said the initiative aims to improve access to justice by allowing women to report issues such as domestic violence, workplace harassment, abandonment, trafficking, maternity-related grievances and other forms of gender-based injustice.

The programme forms part of a wider outreach effort to strengthen grievance redressal mechanisms and increase awareness of women’s rights.

Officials, police and legal experts to attend hearings

Konyak said the public hearings will be conducted before dedicated panels comprising members of the Nagaland State Commission for Women, district administration officials, representatives of the District Legal Services Authority, police officers, legal experts and protection officers.

These panels will hear complaints directly and offer immediate legal guidance where required.

"They will provide immediate hearing of complaints, legal guidance, registration of cases where necessary, and time-bound follow-up mechanisms," Konyak said.

Women will also be allowed to submit walk-in complaints, enabling them to approach the panel without prior registration.

Officials said the effort is particularly aimed at helping women in rural and remote areas, who often face difficulties accessing legal or administrative support.

Hearings scheduled across districts

The district-level hearings will take place at Deputy Commissioner (DC) Conference Halls across several districts of the state.

The schedule announced by the commission includes:

March 9: Tuensang, Zunheboto, Tseminyu and Wokha

March 10: Mokokchung and Niuland

Konyak said the remaining districts will also host hearings on later dates.

The initiative is being organised as part of the International Women’s Day observance, with the focus placed on practical steps to strengthen women’s safety, dignity and access to justice.
