The Rajasthan government on Friday announced the renaming of three well-known places in the state, with Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma making the declaration in the state Assembly while discussing the Finance Bill. The changes affect Mount Abu, Kaman and Jahazpur.
New names announced in the Assembly
As per the announcement, Mount Abu will now be known as Abu Raj, Kaman will now be called Kamvan, and Jahazpur has been renamed to Yagyapur. The Chief Minister said that the decision was taken to preserve the heritage of the state.
The move marks a significant change for Mount Abu, a prominent tourist destination and the only hill station in Rajasthan. Situated at a height of 1,722 metres above sea level, Mount Abu has long been a popular retreat for visitors seeking respite from the heat of the plains. The hill station also holds cultural and mythological significance, as it is said to have served as a retreat for Sage Vashistha.

Kaman and Jahazpur, now renamed Kamvan and Yagyapur respectively, are also historically significant towns in the state. The renaming was formally announced during legislative proceedings, signalling the government’s intent to align place names with what it described as efforts to preserve Rajasthan’s heritage.
The announcement has drawn attention, given the prominence of Mount Abu in the state’s tourism landscape. With the official changes now declared in the Assembly, the new names- Abu Raj, Kamvan and Yagyapur- are set to replace the earlier ones in government records and communication.
