The economic development of a country is intricately linked with the improvement of its transportation system. Along with constructing new roads, there is also a need for maintenance of roads, bridges, and tunnels. The government generates revenue from toll plazas on highways for developmental work and maintenance.
Last year, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) increased toll charges by an average of 4-5 percent on the country's highways. As a result, 'single car journey' at multiple toll plazas has increased from ₹150 to ₹300.
If you are planning to travel to any major city like Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru, you should know about some of India's expensive toll booths.
Khalapur Toll Plaza
This is located on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. It is one of India's most expensive single-point tolls. As of 2026, the 'one-way toll' on the highway is ₹320. The total distance of the Mumbai to Pune Express is 94.5 kilometres. The toll rate on this highway is higher due to maintenance costs and vehicle pressure. A monthly pass costs more than ₹10,000. Entering the toll plaza without a FASTag incurs a fine of ₹640.
Atal Setu/ MTHL
This is India's longest sea bridge. The 'Mumbai Trans Harbour Link' was built to further improve connectivity from South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. This bridge charges ₹250 for a 21.8-kilometre journey. This six-lane bridge has reduced the travel time by about one and a half hours.
Sheshagirihalli Toll Plaza
The Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway is South India's most expensive route. This toll plaza charges a 'one-way fee' of ₹170 for cars, jeeps and vans. GPS-based toll system testing is underway. Currently, tolls are being collected through FASTag.
Saiyedpur (Kashi) Toll Plaza
This is located on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Drivers have to pay approximately ₹160 for the entire route from Delhi to Meerut. According to the new rules of 2026, the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate) system imposes a charge based on total travel. However, it takes 45 minutes to reach Meerut from Delhi.
Jewar and Mathura Toll Plaza
The Yamuna Expressway connecting Greater Noida and Agra has three main toll plazas. One of them is the Jewar and Mathura Toll Plaza. The toll charge per section is ₹150 to ₹165. Drivers have to pay a total of ₹440 for the entire journey.
