West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee calls protest march on Women’s Day over LPG price hike and voter list issue
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for a special protest march on Sunday, marking International Women’s Day. The protest will focus on rising LPG prices and the alleged removal of women’s names from voter lists.
Announcing the programme, the Trinamool Congress supremo urged women to take to the streets carrying household utensils such as pots and pans as a symbolic form of protest. Speaking about the issue of voter names being removed, Banerjee said that many women’s names were deleted from the list after they changed their surnames following marriage. She questioned the authority behind such decisions.
“Women’s names have been removed because their surnames changed after marriage. But women have the right to choose which surname they want to keep. They may keep their own surname or take their husband’s surname- that is their choice. Who is the Commission to decide this?” she said.
