A festive Holi gathering in southwest Delhi’s Uttam Nagar quickly descended into chaos and violence, leaving behind grief, anger and a neighbourhood struggling with fear. Two days after 26-year-old Tarun was allegedly beaten to death following a dispute during the celebrations, tensions escalated further when a car and a motorcycle were set ablaze in the area. Residents now say the atmosphere in the locality remains tense, with heavy security deployed and police maintaining a close watch to prevent any further unrest.

A festive dispute that turned deadly

According to The Times of India, the violence traces back to March 4, when a dispute reportedly broke out during Holi celebrations in a narrow lane of Uttam Nagar. What initially appeared to be a small argument soon spiralled into a brutal assault. According to residents, several people gathered in the lane and began attacking Tarun with sticks and rods.

Locals recall the horrifying moments of the attack. Some residents said Tarun tried to steady himself near a pillar at the end of the lane while attempting to escape the blows. Even now, faint blood stains remain visible on the pillar, serving as a grim reminder of the violence that unfolded there.

In the days following the killing, anger and anxiety spread among residents. Tarun’s family members, neighbours and friends gathered outside the local police station on Friday to protest, demanding the arrest of everyone involved in the attack and urging authorities to take strict action.

Police have so far arrested eight people in connection with the case. Four suspects were taken into custody soon after the incident, and four more were arrested on Friday as the investigation continued.

Arson incident heightens tensions

The already tense situation worsened on Friday afternoon when unidentified individuals allegedly set fire to a car and a motorcycle believed to belong to a relative of one of the accused. Fire tenders rushed to the scene to douse the flames, while police began verifying vehicle ownership and the identities of those responsible for the arson.

The neighbourhood has since been placed under tight security. Barricades have been set up at both ends of the lane where the attack took place, and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to maintain order and prevent further clashes.

Residents say the fear has not subsided despite the arrests. Some locals have demanded that the families of the accused should not be allowed to remain in the area, claiming their presence has increased anxiety among others living nearby.
