Deadly explosion at Nowgam police station kills 9, multiple injured, Jammu and Kashmir on high alert

Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a probe as top officials visited the site.

A deadly explosion in Jammu and Kashmir has taken at least nine lives, leaving several injured on Friday night. The explosion occurred near the Nowgam police station, according to a police statement. Pawan Kumar Sharma, Inspector General (IG) of the CRPF, rushed to the site to assess the situation after the explosion.

Authorities have cordoned off the surrounding area of the explosion-affected police station to ensure safety, while officials remain on the spot to implement all precautionary protocols. Director General of Police (DGP), Nalin Prabhat, also visited the location.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area and cooperate with security forces as an investigation into the incident is underway. Security personnel have been deployed at the scene, along with the dog squad, to assist with the investigation.

Second blast in a week heightens security concerns across Delhi–Kashmir

Not even a week has passed after the blast at Delhi's Red Fort, after which the blast incident at Jammu and Kashmir's Nowgam police station marks it the second blast within a span of a week. According to ANI, the threads of the November 10 Delhi blast are linked to objectionable posters in the Nowgam area of Srinagar, for which an FIR was registered on October 19, sources have said, noting security forces took strong action to bust an inter-state Jaish-e-Mohammed module linked to the terror plot.

As soon as news of Tuesday's explosion came in, Delhi Police and other security agencies rushed to the scene. Home Minister Amit Shah immediately directed the deployment of NSG, NIA, and forensic teams for the investigation. While the injured were promptly taken to the nearest hospital and the ownership of the vehicle used in the blast was confirmed.
