Delhi reels under 51.3°C 'feels like' heat as humidity spikes; rain likely from Monday

Delhi witnessed one of its most uncomfortable days of the season on Saturday as soaring humidity combined with high temperatures pushed the city's heat index, or "feels like" temperature, to 51.3 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded this year. Although forecasts had predicted weekend showers and thunderstorms, the expected relief failed to arrive, leaving residents to endure oppressive weather conditions.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded a maximum temperature of 41.3C, which was 4.1 degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 30.8C, nearly 3 degrees above normal. Humidity levels fluctuated between 35% and 63% during the day, making outdoor conditions particularly uncomfortable.

Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Skymet Weather, explained the reason behind the sharp rise in humidity. "Currently there are southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea, which are feeding moisture over Pakistan and northwestern India, which are increasing the humidity level. The 'feels-like' temperature is high due to this increased humidity, combined with the high temperature. The monsoon is also not close, as, if it were, winds would be approaching from the Bay of Bengal, which we are currently not seeing. So the 'feels like' temperature is likely to remain high over the coming few days," he said.

Wet-bulb temperature remains elevated

The IMD also noted relatively high wet-bulb temperatures, reaching 29.77C at 2.30 pm and 28.09C at 5.30 pm. Higher wet-bulb values make it increasingly difficult for the human body to cool itself, especially during prolonged outdoor exposure.

Rain forecast to bring relief this week

The weather department expects daytime temperatures to remain between 39C and 41C until Monday. From Tuesday onward, temperatures are likely to decline gradually as rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds are forecast through Friday. A yellow alert has been issued for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Palawat added, "Although the humidity is likely to remain for a few days, by July 2 or 3, there are chances of scattered rainfall, which should reduce the temperature. Additionally, monsoon is expected after July 4."

FAQs:

Why is Delhi's 'feels like' temperature higher than the actual temperature?

High humidity reduces sweat evaporation, making the body feel much hotter than the recorded air temperature.

When will Delhi get relief from the heatwave and humidity?

According to the IMD, rainfall and thunderstorms are expected from Monday, with temperatures gradually dropping through the week.
