Ireland stun West Indies to seal maiden Women’s T20 World Cup win

Ireland beat West Indies by six wickets to secure their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup win as Orla Prendergast’s fifty and a disciplined bowling display sealed a famous upset.

Ireland created history with a memorable six-wicket victory over West Indies in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, registering their first-ever win in the tournament. The result ended a 22-match winless streak at the event and dealt a major blow to West Indies’ hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

Already out of the tournament, Ireland produced a disciplined performance with both bat and ball to finish their campaign on a high.

Ireland bowlers restrict West Indies

After choosing to field, Ireland’s bowlers kept West Indies under pressure throughout the innings. The Caribbean side struggled to score freely and managed only 128 runs.

Aimee Maguire claimed 2/22, while Cara Murray picked up 2/13 in an impressive spell. Captain Hayley Matthews scored 22 before falling to Murray, while Chinelle Henry remained unbeaten on 27. Ireland’s attack shared the wickets and did not allow West Indies to hit a single six during the innings.

Prendergast anchors historic chase

Ireland lost captain Gaby Lewis early, but Orla Prendergast steadied the innings with a composed half-century. She added a vital 62-run partnership with Amy Hunter, who contributed 28.

Prendergast kept the chase under control before the middle order finished the job with 11 balls to spare, sealing a famous victory.

The defeat leaves West Indies dependent on other results to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
