Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as India's next Chief of the Army Staff, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi at a time when the Indian Army is focusing on operational readiness, technological modernisation and evolving border security challenges. Currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lt Gen Seth brings nearly 40 years of military experience spanning conventional warfare, counter-insurgency operations and strategic planning.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Over the course of his career, he has built a reputation as a seasoned commander with extensive operational and administrative expertise.
A career shaped by command and combat experience
According to NDTV, Lt Gen Seth has held command appointments across some of the Indian Army's most significant formations. He has led an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, commanded an Armoured Brigade and headed a Counter Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir. His leadership experience also includes serving as the General Officer Commanding of Delhi Area and commanding the prestigious Sudarshan Chakra Corps.
In a rare distinction, he became one of the few Indian Army officers to command both the South Western Command and the Southern Command, giving him operational oversight of two crucial military theatres along India's western front.

Strategic appointments beyond the battlefield
According to NDTV, apart from field commands, Lt Gen Seth has occupied several important staff and planning roles during his service. He has worked as Brigade Major of an Independent Armoured Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir, served with the United Nations Mission in Angola and held key appointments at Army Headquarters.
His responsibilities have included serving as Assistant Military Secretary, Brigadier General Staff (Operations), and Director General of Discipline, Ceremonial and Welfare. He has also played an influential role in shaping the Army's long-term capability development, contributing to strategic acquisition programmes and the Long-Term Integrated Perspective Plan aimed at strengthening future military preparedness.

Academic excellence complements military leadership
According to NDTV, Lt Gen Seth's professional achievements extend beyond operational service. He topped the Junior Command Course and received the Best All Round Student Officer medal at the Defence Services Staff College. He has also completed the Higher Command Course, attended the National Defence College and successfully graduated from the Command and Staff Course in Paris.
Having assumed charge as Vice Chief of the Army Staff on April 1, 2026, Lt Gen Seth now steps into the Army's highest office with a blend of operational experience, strategic vision and academic excellence. His appointment comes at a critical phase as the Indian Army continues to modernise its capabilities while addressing complex security challenges along multiple frontiers.
