Cape Verde’s dream run at the FIFA World Cup 2026 has been hit by a major off-field controversy after captain Ryan Mendes became the subject of a rape investigation in New Zealand. The allegation surfaced just days before Cape Verde’s Round of 32 match against defending champions Argentina, overshadowing the nation’s historic campaign.
Police investigating complaint
According to reports, the complaint was filed by a Brazilian woman who worked as an interpreter for the Cape Verde team during the FIFA Series in New Zealand in March. She alleged that Mendes entered her hotel room after Cape Verde’s friendly against Chile and sexually assaulted her.

Neither Mendes nor the Cape Verde Football Federation has issued a public statement on the matter.
The 36-year-old has continued to represent Cape Verde during the World Cup, where the African nation scripted history by becoming the smallest country ever to reach the knockout stage of the tournament.
Cape Verde are scheduled to face Argentina in the Round of 32, but the serious allegations against their captain have shifted attention away from their impressive performances on the pitch. With the investigation still ongoing, it remains unclear whether the case will have any impact on Mendes’ participation in the remainder of the tournament.
