Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as Assam Chief Minister for a second straight term after the BJP-led NDA secured a massive victory in the 2026 Assembly polls.

Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday after the BJP-led NDA secured a decisive victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, in the presence of several top BJP leaders and Chief Ministers from across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the ceremony along with senior BJP leaders. Newly designated West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was also present at the event.

The ceremony witnessed the participation of leaders from multiple states, highlighting the BJP’s strong political presence in the region and beyond. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Maharashtra leader Devendra Fadnavis and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu attended the event.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton and Minister Jacob Zhimomi were also among those present during the oath-taking ceremony.

Family calls it a ‘happy moment’

Speaking with ANI, Sarma’s wife and daughter expressed happiness over the NDA government returning to power in Assam for another term. Calling it a “happy moment,” they spoke about the significance of the occasion as the BJP-led alliance strengthened its hold in the northeastern state.

BJP registers massive victory in Assam

The BJP-led NDA delivered a commanding performance in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, securing a third straight term in the state. In the 126-member Assam Assembly, the BJP won 82 seats, while the Congress managed to secure only 19 constituencies.

The result marked another major electoral success for Himanta Biswa Sarma, who first became Chief Minister in 2021 after replacing Sarbananda Sonowal following the BJP alliance’s victory in that election.

This time, Sarma contested from the Jalukbari constituency in Guwahati, a seat considered his political stronghold. He retained the constituency with a margin of more than 89,000 votes, further cementing his position as one of the BJP’s key leaders in the Northeast.
