From UAE to Italy: PM Modi's five-nation tour to focus on trade, energy and Europe ties

The India-Nordic Summit in Oslo will be a major highlight of PM Modi’s five-nation visit, which also includes key meetings in the UAE and several European countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a five-nation visit this week, with stops in the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy. The visit is expected to focus on trade, investment, energy cooperation, technology and strategic partnerships, with the India-Nordic Summit in Oslo emerging as a key highlight, per a Hindustan Times report.

UAE visit to focus on energy and trade

Modi will visit the United Arab Emirates on May 15, where he will hold talks with President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. According to the External Affairs Ministry, the two leaders will discuss bilateral issues, especially energy cooperation, along with regional and international developments.

The visit will also focus on strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. India and the UAE share strong economic ties, with the Gulf nation being India's third-largest trade partner and a major source of investment. The visit is also expected to address the welfare of the more than 4.5 million Indians living in the UAE.

Netherlands, Sweden visits to deepen strategic ties

In the second leg of the tour, Modi will travel to the Netherlands from May 15 to 17. He is scheduled to meet King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Discussions are expected to cover defence, semiconductors, innovation, green hydrogen and water management cooperation, reported HT.

The Netherlands remains one of India's largest European trade destinations, with bilateral trade touching $27.8 billion in 2024-25.

Modi will then visit Sweden on May 17-18 for talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The discussions are likely to focus on green transition, artificial intelligence, defence, climate action and resilient supply chains. The two leaders will also address the European Roundtable for Industry alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

India-Nordic Summit in Oslo

Norway will host the third India-Nordic Summit on May 19. Modi's visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in 43 years. During the trip, he will meet King Harald V, Queen Sonja and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.

"The visit will also be an opportunity to induce momentum in bilateral trade worth around $2.73 billion (2024), and investments by Norway's Government Pension Fund (GPFG) of close to $28 billion in the Indian capital market," the statement said, per HT.

"India is the world's largest democracy and the world's most populous country. India plays a central role in climate, technology, trade and international security. This visit underlines the importance of cooperation between India, Norway and the Nordic countries in these times of global instability. We stand together in promoting international cooperation and a rules-based world order," Store said in a statement.

The summit will bring together leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden to strengthen cooperation in technology, green transition, defence, space and the Arctic region.

Final stop in Italy

In the final leg of the visit, Modi will travel to Italy on May 19-20 for talks with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella. The discussions will focus on implementing the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025-2029, with emphasis on trade and investment cooperation.
