As a proximate neighbour with critical stakes in regional stability, India underscored the vulnerability of nearly one crore Indian citizens living and working in the Gulf. The government acknowledged that some Indian nationals have lost their lives or are missing due to recent attacks, particularly those targeting merchant shipping. India also highlighted the strategic dimension: vital trade routes and energy supply chains pass through this geography. Any disruption to maritime traffic carries serious implications for the Indian economy. With a large share of global oil shipments transiting the Strait of Hormuz, prolonged instability could impact fuel prices, shipping costs and broader trade flows.
