As the conflict in West Asia intensifies, India has sharpened its tone while maintaining its calibrated diplomatic balance. In a statement issued on March 3, 2026, the government expressed deep anxiety over the expanding hostilities in Iran and the Gulf, warning that the mounting violence carries grave humanitarian and economic consequences. For New Delhi, this is not a distant crisis; it is unfolding in a region where Indian lives, livelihoods and energy lifelines are deeply embedded.

Lives, livelihoods and supply chains at stake

India had first voiced concern on February 28, urging all sides to exercise restraint and prioritise civilian safety. Since then, the Ministry of External Affairs noted, the situation has deteriorated significantly, with the conflict spreading to other nations and normal economic activity slowing across parts of the region.

As a proximate neighbour with critical stakes in regional stability, India underscored the vulnerability of nearly one crore Indian citizens living and working in the Gulf. Their safety and well-being, the statement said, remain an utmost priority. The government acknowledged that some Indian nationals have lost their lives or are missing due to recent attacks, particularly those targeting merchant shipping. India also highlighted the strategic dimension: vital trade routes and energy supply chains pass through this geography. Any disruption to maritime traffic carries serious implications for the Indian economy. With a large share of global oil shipments transiting the Strait of Hormuz, prolonged instability could impact fuel prices, shipping costs and broader trade flows.

Diplomacy over escalation

Reiterating its long-standing position, India called for dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable path forward. The government urged an early end to the conflict, expressing grief over the loss of lives and destruction already witnessed.

Indian embassies and consulates across affected countries are in constant touch with the diaspora and community organisations, issuing advisories and extending assistance to those stranded. The statement affirmed that missions would remain proactive in addressing consular challenges arising from the crisis.

At the diplomatic level, the prime minister and external affairs minister have held discussions with counterparts in the region and beyond, reflecting sustained engagement behind the scenes.

India’s message is clear: de-escalation is imperative, and civilian safety must prevail over military calculus. While New Delhi continues to walk a careful diplomatic line, its concern is unmistakable. With lives at risk, supply chains exposed and a vast diaspora watching anxiously, the government has pledged to monitor developments closely and act in the national interest as the situation evolves.
