Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed a 50 per cent reduction in the number of vehicles used in his official convoy as part of a wider austerity and fuel conservation push amid rising global uncertainties.

The Prime Minister has also asked the Special Protection Group (SPG), which handles his security arrangements, to increase the use of electric vehicles in his convoy. However, he reportedly instructed that no new vehicles should be purchased specifically for this purpose.

The move is now being echoed in several BJP-ruled states. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav have also decided to reduce the number of vehicles in their official convoys.

The decision is being linked to the Centre's larger message on responsible fuel use and cutting unnecessary expenditure. It comes at a time when crude oil prices remain elevated due to the ongoing US-Iran conflict and concerns over global energy supply chains.

PM's call for 'nationally responsible' choices

On Sunday, PM Modi appealed to citizens to adopt what he described as "nationally responsible" lifestyle choices in order to help the country deal with global economic uncertainty, inflationary pressure and supply-chain disruptions.

Promoting the use of local products, he asked, "How can the nation progress if we depend on imports for everything?"

The Prime Minister also urged people to avoid non-essential gold purchases for a year in order to reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves. He advised citizens to cut down on overseas travel and destination weddings abroad, while encouraging domestic tourism and celebrations within India.

According to the Prime Minister, conserving foreign exchange reserves should be seen as an act of patriotism during a period of global economic volatility and rising energy concerns.
