The Assam government is getting serious about illegal immigration once again, as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked district leaders to find people living in their areas without the right papers and make sure they are sent back home according to the law. This isn't just about patrolling the borders but about checking who is already living inside the state.

Focus on local monitoring

The Chief Minister wants local officials like the District Commissioners and the police to be more alert and has asked them to look closely at neighbourhoods where they suspect illegal settlers might be staying. The plan is to use local information to spot people who don’t belong there. The government hopes to close the gaps that illegal immigrants often use to hide in plain sight by asking the districts to stay on high alert.

Increasing police power

The Border Police is a big part of the plan, as the state wants these officers to work more closely with regular police and village groups. The idea is that if the people living in a village notice someone new and suspicious, they should have a quick way to tell the authorities. This ground-level watch is meant to make it much harder for anyone to enter or stay in Assam illegally. The Chief Minister emphasised that everything must be done by the book, which means using the Foreigners Tribunals and following legal steps so that no one is treated unfairly. The goal is to make sure that when someone is identified as a foreigner, the legal case against them is strong enough that it will lead to actual deportation rather than just getting stuck in court.

People of Assam feel that illegal immigration puts a lot of pressure on their land, jobs, and culture. By pushing for these deportations, the government is trying to show that it is looking out for the legal citizens of the state. It’s a move to ensure that the resources of Assam are used by the people who truly have a right to be there.
