Royal Challengers Bengaluru have suffered a setback ahead of the IPL 2026 playoffs after England all-rounder Jacob Bethell was ruled out due to injury. The franchise confirmed that the youngster will return home for further assessment and recovery, creating a gap in RCBโ€™s squad during the crucial final phase of the tournament.

Bethell, who joined RCB with high expectations this season, had shown flashes of his all-round ability despite limited opportunities. His aggressive batting style and useful left-arm spin added balance to the side, especially in middle-order situations where RCB often needed quick momentum shifts. However, the injury has now forced the team management to rethink combinations ahead of the knockout stage.

RCB lose depth before playoffs

The timing of Bethellโ€™s exit comes as a concern for RCB, who have already battled inconsistency in squad availability this season. With playoff pressure increasing, losing a versatile overseas player reduces flexibility in both batting and bowling departments.

The franchise did not disclose the exact nature of the injury but stated that Bethell would return to England immediately for medical attention. Team officials are expected to evaluate replacement options depending on the severity of the issue and tournament requirements.

RCB have relied heavily on their experienced core this season, but younger overseas recruits like Bethell were expected to provide energy and tactical variety in crunch matches.

His absence could now increase workload on the senior players during the business end of the competition.

England monitoring player fitness closely

England and Wales Cricket Boardโ€™s workload management has also become an important factor as several players continue to move between franchise and international commitments. With a packed international calendar approaching, player fitness remains a major priority.

Bethell is regarded as one of Englandโ€™s rising white-ball prospects and the decision to send him back suggests caution regarding his long-term availability. RCB, meanwhile, will hope the injury setback does not disrupt their momentum as they push for IPL glory in the playoffs.
