Chennai Super Kings may have finished IPL 2026 with a small financial gain, but their campaign on the field told a very different story. Despite reportedly making nearly INR 8 crore in profit through squad management and player dealings, CSK endured one of their most disappointing seasons in recent years.

The five-time champions struggled for consistency throughout the tournament and failed to establish themselves as serious playoff contenders. While a few players produced occasional standout performances, the team largely failed to click as a unit. CSK ended the season with only six wins, exposing deeper problems within the squad.

Expensive stars fail to justify investment

A major concern for CSK was the poor return from several high-priced and experienced players. The franchise invested heavily in its senior core, hoping for stability and leadership, but many of those players failed to deliver consistently. The batting lacked intent in crucial moments, while the bowling attack often struggled under pressure.

Questions were also raised about the team’s approach in modern T20 cricket, with critics pointing to outdated tactics and a lack of aggressive gameplay.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also faced pressure during a difficult season, as CSK looked uncertain in both leadership and execution during key matches.

Bigger rebuild questions emerge

Although CSK remain one of the IPL’s strongest commercial brands with massive fan support, financial success cannot hide the cricketing issues from IPL 2026.

The season highlighted problems in squad balance, middle-order firepower, and bowling depth. What was expected to be a fresh rebuilding phase instead turned into another disappointing campaign for the franchise.

With another auction cycle approaching, CSK management will now face important decisions regarding the future of their ageing core and overall team strategy. For a franchise known for consistency and smart planning, IPL 2026 will likely be remembered as a season where profits remained healthy, but performances failed to meet expectations.
