Ruturaj Gaikwad endured a difficult outing in IPL 2026 as Chennai Super Kings stumbled against Gujarat Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. While the CSK skipper showed resilience under pressure, his slow-paced innings has drawn sharp criticism in a format that prioritises momentum and strike rate.
With CSK collapsing early, Gaikwad attempted to rebuild the innings from one end. However, as the game progressed, his cautious approach began to hurt the team’s scoring rate, putting additional pressure on the lower order.
Gaikwad registers the slowest fifty of the season
Gaikwad walked in at a crisis moment with CSK at 37/4 and chose to anchor the innings. He brought up his half-century in 49 balls, marking his first fifty of the season after a string of low scores. He eventually remained unbeaten on 74 off 60 balls, hitting 6 fours and 4 sixes.
Despite the fighting effort, his knock entered the record books for the wrong reason. It is now the slowest half-century of IPL 2026, surpassing Rishabh Pant’s 43-ball fifty against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The innings has sparked debate over whether anchoring alone is enough in high-pressure T20 situations.
CSK's batting collapse exposes a lack of support
CSK’s batting unit failed to complement their captain’s effort. The team reached 50 runs in 12 overs, registering their second-slowest team half-century in IPL history, just behind their 2011 record against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Apart from Gaikwad, only Shivam Dube managed a modest 22 runs, while the rest of the lineup struggled to make an impact. The lack of partnerships and inability to accelerate left CSK with a below-par total of 150/7 in 20 overs.
