Whether it's a breakup or the daily stress of life, everything affects the mind, and no situation leaves a heart without hurt. But does that hurt only mentally, or does it affect the body too? Science says emotional trauma can harm the heart, too. Medically, it is known as Broken Heart Syndrome, or technically, Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy.

There is a direct link between mental health and physical health. Too much stress, depression, or sadness may cause severe damage to the body. During such mental states, the level of the cortisol hormone increases. This hormone not only enhances emotional distress but also creates various physical complications, including insomnia, loss of appetite, body aches, hair fall, a tired look in the eyes and face. It may even affect the heart.

In Broken Heart Syndrome, the normal functioning of the heart is disrupted. Stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline weaken the heart muscle, which is why emotional pain often feels like the chest is crushed. The left ventricle of the heart swells, somewhat in the manner of a balloon. However, unlike a heart attack, Broken Heart Syndrome is usually not life-threatening.
