Safety is perhaps the most important concern for a child today. As children grow older, their mobility outside-to school, to parks, or coaching classes-increases. It is, therefore, very important to teach them from an early age which touches are safe (good touch) and which are not (bad touch). If this lesson is taught well, it instils in the child the confidence to safeguard themselves from dangerous situations.

A good touch is one that usually conveys affection, care, or love. For instance, a hug from the mother, a patting on the head by the father, or a gentle and caring touch from the teacher or relative. Such touches make a child feel safe and comfortable. The child should understand that touches that make them feel good are good.

On the other hand, a bad touch is the touch that makes the child feel uncomfortable, embarrassed, or scared. This includes anyone trying to touch their private parts, forcing them to sit on their lap, or touching them unusually or inappropriately. Children should be clearly told, "Your body belongs to you. No one can touch you without your permission."

This can be practised daily at home in a playful manner. The rule “No, Go, Tell” should be emphasized:

No- Say a firm “No” out loud.

Go - Move immediately away from the situation.

Tell- Inform a trusted adult about the incident.

Most importantly, children must be made to understand that in case it does happen, it is not their fault. If they speak out, their family will believe them. Awareness about good touch and bad touch not only saves the child but also instils in them courage, confidence, and respect for themselves. Thus, this simple yet quintessential lesson of safety must begin at home.
