Fish dying in aquariums as winter sets in? Keep a few things in mind

Winter care tips for aquarium fish: maintain proper temperature, limit water changes, avoid overfeeding, and ensure oxygen and filtration.

An aquarium filled with colourful fish significantly enhances the beauty of a home. Buying new fish for the aquarium is like an addiction for many people. During other times of the year, there's no particular concern about keeping fish in aquariums. But fish certainly have some relationship with falling mercury levels. Otherwise, why would there be an unexplained die-off during winter despite cleaning the aquarium every week? What should you do if this happens?

1) Generally, Kolkata doesn't experience such severe cold. However, if you notice the temperature dropping abnormally, you must use a heater. A thermostat-controlled water heater particularly helps in controlling water temperature. The water temperature should be maintained between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius.

2) You cannot rely on your hand with closed eyes to understand the water temperature. Experts say it's better to use a thermometer in this case. Thermometers are available that can be attached to the inner wall of the aquarium. The advantage of using such devices is that you can see the water temperature in front of your eyes all the time.

3) More things need to be kept in mind during winter. While you regularly change the aquarium water during other times of the year, don't do this too frequently during cold weather. Depending on the water condition, cleaning once a month is sufficient. A filter must be used to keep the water clean.

4) Fish face increased digestive problems during winter. Therefore, never give excess food to your aquarium pets. If excess food floats in the water, it can deteriorate water quality. In that case, fish may have breathing problems. Fish also die more in winter due to oxygen deficiency.
