From sleepmaxxing and looksmaxxing to careermaxxing, social media has popularised the idea of optimising different aspects of life. The latest term gaining attention is "solo-maxxing" — a trend that links dating decisions to financial realities.

Unlike self-love movements that focus on personal empowerment, solo-maxxing centres on a practical consideration: the growing cost of maintaining a romantic relationship.

For many Gen Z and Millennial adults, rising expenses associated with dating, including meals, outings, gifts and shared experiences, are becoming harder to justify amid broader financial pressures.

Dating burnout meets inflation

According to Bank of Montreal's 2026 Real Financial Progress Index, Americans spent an average of $2,323 (approximately Rs 2.2 lakh) on dates over the past year. The report also found that people went on fewer dates compared to the previous year, reflecting changing spending habits.

The survey highlights how finances are influencing romantic choices. Nearly 47 per cent of respondents said dating was not worth the expense, while half of Gen Z participants and 40 per cent of Millennials felt dating costs were interfering with their broader financial goals.

The trend follows the rise of "friendflation", where people began cutting back on social activities due to rising costs. Solo-maxxing appears to be an extension of that mindset into the dating world.

Not just an American phenomenon

While the survey focused on the United States, similar concerns resonate elsewhere.

In major Indian cities, a dinner date for two can easily cost around Rs 2,000 or more. Multiple outings each month can significantly increase spending, prompting some people to prioritise personal goals, savings and self-development over actively pursuing relationships.

For some, solo-maxxing means spending less time on dating apps and more time focusing on career growth, hobbies, mental well-being and financial stability.

Finding the balance

Supporters of the trend see it as a practical response to modern pressures. However, experts often caution that choosing to remain single should be driven by personal preference rather than avoidance.

While enjoying one's own company can be healthy, completely withdrawing from relationships and social connections may carry risks similar to those highlighted during the friendflation trend, including loneliness and isolation.

At its core, solo-maxxing reflects changing attitudes toward dating in an era shaped by rising living costs, financial uncertainty and growing relationship fatigue.
