Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today, welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran, saying India hopes the move will help restore peace and stability in West Asia and safeguard freedom of navigation and commerce.

The remarks came after Washington and Tehran announced an initial agreement aimed at easing tensions in the region and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime chokepoint for global energy flows.

A hopeful note amid restless waters

In a post on X, Modi said: “I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries.”

He added that “India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce,” while also saying New Delhi looked forward to talks on the remaining issues to reach “a sustainable final agreement.”

The ink is not dry, but the mood has shifted

The agreement was announced on Sunday, with US President Donald Trump saying it would bring “peace and security” to West Asia.

He also posted, “The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” and later added, “Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed the deal and indicated that Tehran would move ahead only after the agreement is formally signed.

The final act remains unwritten

The deal is set to be signed on Friday in Switzerland.

The understanding is intended to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend a fragile ceasefire, while discussions on the remaining issues are expected to continue before any final agreement is reached.
