A growing number of Indian singles are turning to an unexpected strategy to stand out on dating apps: featuring their pets. The trend, often referred to as "pet-fishing", is gaining traction as users look for easier ways to spark conversations and connect.
What is 'pet-fishing'?
In simple terms, pet-fishing refers to the practice of showcasing pets on dating profiles to attract attention and signal personality traits such as warmth and responsibility.

A recent survey by happn, a dating app, found that 19 per cent of Indian singles have either featured pets on their profiles or considered doing so. The approach is not just about aesthetics; it is increasingly seen as a way to create a more approachable first impression.
Pets as conversation starters
For many users, pets serve as an easy entry point into conversation. Around 21 per cent of respondents described pets as the ultimate icebreaker, helping reduce awkwardness and establish common ground early on.
The presence of a pet also influences perception. About 26 per cent of singles view pet owners as "softies", while 22 per cent see it as an immediate positive signal. The appeal is particularly strong among younger users under 30, who often interpret pet photos as a sign of kindness and emotional openness.
Older singles, however, tend to look beyond the initial impression, focusing more on compatibility after the first interaction.
Changing dating habits
The trend is also shaping how people choose to meet. While 33 per cent still prefer traditional coffee dates, others are opting for more relaxed settings. About 25 per cent favour dog walks in open spaces such as Lodhi Gardens or Marina Beach, where conversations can flow naturally. Another 20 per cent prefer casual meetups centred around pets, such as chai outings.

The rise of pet-fishing reflects a broader shift in how people approach dating. Small, relatable cues are being used to ease early interactions and reduce pressure. While pets may help break the ice, they are not a substitute for deeper compatibility, which remains central to forming lasting connections.
