Indian nationals can now transit through German airports without requiring a Schengen Airport Transit Visa (Type A), as Germany's long-awaited visa relaxation officially came into effect on June 3, 2026.
Indians can now travel without an airport transit visa
The decision was first announced in January 2026 during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's maiden official visit to India on January 12 and 13. Under the new arrangement, Indian passport holders travelling through major German aviation hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich en route to non-Schengen destinations will no longer need an airport transit visa.
Confirming the implementation, the German Embassy in New Delhi issued an official press note on June 2, 2026. It stated, "Indian nationals will no longer require a transit visa when travelling to another country with a layover at a German airport. The lifting of the so-called airport transit visa requirement for Indian citizens was announced in the Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt) on June 2, 2026, and takes effect on June 3, 2026."
The embassy further noted, "This implementation is a result of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz's trip to India in January of this year. It underlines the Federal Government's commitment to deepening German-Indian relations, facilitating the movement of people, and further strengthening economic ties."

Indians appreciate effective connection
India welcomed the move, with Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal acknowledging the development on X. He wrote, "We welcome the operationalization by Germany of the announcement waiving the requirement of a transit visa for Indian nationals transiting through Germany, exclusively by air, with effect from June 03, 2026."
Jaiswal added, "The announcement was made after discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Merz during the latter's visit to India in January 2026." He also noted that the measure is expected to strengthen people-to-people connections between the two countries.

Exemption only for airside transit
The exemption applies only to airside transit. Travellers must remain within the international transit zone of the airport, continue their journey to a non-Schengen destination within 24 hours and must not leave the airport premises. The waiver does not grant entry into Germany or any other Schengen country, and passengers wishing to exit the airport will still need the appropriate visa.

According to Germany Visa's official website, "If your transit involves more than one Schengen country, the 'transit privilege' does not apply, and you will need a Schengen tourist visa. This is because exiting the transit area in one Schengen country constitutes entry into the Schengen Zone, even for a brief period."
The change is expected to simplify travel planning for Indian students, professionals and families by reducing paperwork, lowering costs and providing access to a wider range of international flight connections through Germany.
