Sri Lanka ranks quite low on the list of foreign travel destinations. But when it comes to budget, many might mention this beautiful island nation. However, the unfortunate reality is that the cost of traveling to Sri Lanka is set to increase significantly at present. The intensifying geopolitical tensions in West Asia and the rise in fuel oil prices in the global market have directly impacted Sri Lanka's economy. As a result, Indians' dream trip to Sri Lanka may now become more expensive than before.
Why are costs rising?
For fuel, Sri Lanka has to rely entirely on imported oil. As oil prices have increased in the global market, the country's fuel prices have already risen by approximately 25%. This is naturally affecting the tourism sector.

In which areas are costs increasing?
Transportation cost increase: Due to rising fuel prices, fares for tuk-tuks (autos), private taxis and buses have jumped significantly. As a result, the cost of visiting tourist attractions is now higher than before.
Airfare: Rising jet fuel prices on international routes are forcing airlines to increase ticket prices. Air Asia has already announced plans to raise their ticket prices by approximately 30-40%.
Hotel and food prices: Hotels require fuel for electricity, AC and logistics. With input costs rising, hotel room rates and restaurant expenses are also increasing proportionally.

Tourist centre entry fees: After the economic crisis of 2022, the Sri Lankan government has already increased entry fees and guide charges at various tourist centres significantly to earn foreign currency, putting pressure on tourists' pockets.
Experts say that if you're planning to visit Sri Lanka, it would be wise to increase your budget by at least 20-30%. Additionally, some savings could be made by cutting costs in smaller areas. For example, booking flights in advance for transportation or using public transport. Shopping wisely. Instead of booking a car for one or two people, if you can share costs with a group, the expenses will be reduced. Similarly, choosing budget hotels instead of star-rated hotels can also save money.
