Increasingly popular wellness centers offer a new kind of class called âpuppy yogaâ, a combination of yoga and young puppies that helps many find a way to reduce stress and practice less intense forms of exercise.
This innovative idea involves conducting yoga classes where puppies can freely run around the room along with other students. In contrast to regular yoga classes that emphasise body positions and self-discipline, such classes concentrate on relaxing and enjoying the process of being with an animal.
Wellness centers specialising in puppy yoga sometimes work together with local shelters and breeders, using this opportunity to promote dog adoption and socialisation.

How sessions work and why they appeal
An average class starts with basic stretching and breathing techniques, which are comparable to an introductory yoga class. When puppies join the session, the atmosphere turns more casual. Puppies wander throughout the space, interact with students, and sometimes disrupt postures.
Teachers normally try to accommodate students by letting them take breaks and play with the puppies, and this is among the reasons why the trend is gaining popularity.
For some people, the approach relieves the stress that comes with yoga, thus making it easier for them to attend a class.
Mental health benefits backed by research
According to scientists, interaction with animals may have positive impacts on oneâs psychological well-being. According to the National Institutes of Health, spending time with animals helps decrease cortisol, a stress hormone, while at the same time increasing oxytocin, a hormone responsible for bonding and relaxation.
The CDC has also acknowledged that interaction with pets can help alleviate feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and stress.
If yoga, known for its relaxing breathing techniques and movements, is performed simultaneously, the entire process becomes even more calming and rejuvenating.

Not for everyone, experts caution
Although puppy yoga has become quite popular, it may not suit all individuals. Those who are allergic to dogs or have a phobia towards them or suffer from certain ailments may feel that their surroundings are not very comfortable.
It has also been emphasised by authorities that ethical measures must be adopted. The puppies must never be overexposed or overstressed while in these classes.
