A fitness trend that swaps treadmills for animal-like movement is drawing attention across social media and workout communities. Known as “quadrobics”, the practice involves crawling, jumping and sprinting using both hands and feet, mimicking the movement of four-legged animals.

The new fitness trend is being celebrated by people who want to try something different from regular workouts. Although it may seem strange, it is actually being marketed as a challenging workout that targets multiple body parts simultaneously.

What are quadrobics?

Based on the term quadrupedal, quadrobics refers to physical activities done on all fours. These include activities like bear crawls to engage the core muscles, cat leaps for increased agility, cheetah runs for stamina, and crab walks to tone the back and hip muscles.

It is related to the primal movement concept that advocates going back to our innate human motion patterns. The training regime requires few accessories and can be done anywhere outdoors.

Why the trend is gaining traction

The rise of quadrobics has been driven largely by social media, where users post videos attempting animal-style movements and challenges. At the same time, there has been a noticeable shift in fitness preferences, with many people moving away from repetitive gym workouts in favour of more engaging, functional routines.

Trainers say the appeal lies in its mix of intensity and playfulness. Unlike structured gym sessions, quadrobics offers a sense of freedom while still delivering physical results.

Fitness and mental health benefits

However, according to fitness experts, quadrobics works several muscles groups at once, especially core, shoulders, and legs. It even allows working out the core better than many other exercises such as planks do.

The movement is beneficial for increasing flexibility, improving joint mobility and balance due to enhanced coordination of the brain and muscles. Sprint-style variants work well for improving cardio endurance, and shorter sessions help burn a lot of calories.

In addition to physical training, the exercise helps relieve stress and increase concentration, which is why it is considered "a movement based mindfulness exercise".

Caution for novices

At the same time, specialists advise taking care since an improper execution technique may be harmful to the wrists, knees, and lumbar spine. Novices should take their time, exercise on soft ground, and pay special attention to technique.

Thus, despite the growing popularity of fitness trends, one can see that some exercises have come closer to returning us to nature – or rather, the basic principles of physical development.
