World Obesity Day is observed on March 4th of every year, focusing on shedding light on the issue of obesity and the effects it has on health globally. It is observed as an opportunity to increase awareness, break myths, and eliminate the stigma associated with the condition.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), obesity is recognised as one of the biggest risk factors for non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and cancer. With the rise of obesity globally, there is an emphasis on increasing awareness and preventive measures regarding the condition

History and Significance

World Obesity Day was first observed in 2015, initiated by the World Obesity Federation, a non-profit organisation that works closely with the World Health Organisation and the Lancet Commission on Obesity. It is observed as an opportunity to raise awareness regarding the causes and effects of obesity and take action at local, national, and international levels. It focuses on the various causes of obesity, including economic, social, and environmental factors, and promotes healthy public health policies and practices.

What is the theme for 2026?

The theme for World Obesity Day 2026 is "8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity." The message is about working together to combat obesity, which is becoming a growing public health problem worldwide.

There are more than a billion people worldwide who are living with obesity, and the trend is rising in many countries globally, especially among children.

Health risks linked to obesity

Having too much body fat can increase the risk for various health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, and musculoskeletal disorders. It can also increase the risk for some cancers, such as breast, endometrial, and colon cancer.

Besides physical health, obesity can also affect mental health, quality of life, and healthcare worldwide.

Countries with the lowest obesity rates

While the prevalence of obesity is high in many countries, some countries also have lower rates of obesity. A good number of these countries include those from Asia and Africa.

According to the World Population Review report of 2022, Vietnam has one of the lowest rates at 2.1%. Timor-Leste follows with a rate of 2.2%, while Ethiopia has a rate of 2.4%.

Madagascar has a rate of around 4.45%, while Cambodia has a rate of around 4.5%.

Where India stands

India also features among the countries with comparatively lower rates of obesity at around 7.51% as of 2022.

However, experts have reportedly warned of a gradual increase in the rate of obesity due to the increasing rate of the consumption of processed foods, which is replacing traditional foods in the country.
