Hidden in the folds of Maharashtra’s Sahyadri hills lies a town that feels nothing like the usual Indian hill station. Think pastel buildings, cobbled streets and a quiet lakeside that could easily pass for a European postcard. This is Lavasa, often called the ‘Italy of India’, a place where Mediterranean charm meets mountain calm just a few hours from the city.

Why is Lavasa called the ‘Italy of India’?

Lavasa was designed to resemble Portofino, the colourful harbour town on Italy’s Riviera. The similarity is evident in its Mediterranean architecture, balconies with arches, and vibrant streets that line the promenade. Hugging the calm waters of Warasgaon Lake and surrounded by rolling hills, the town combines nature’s beauty with intelligent planning.

The lakeside promenade is the pulse of Lavasa. Residents walk along the shores of the lake, cycle along the paved roads, or simply sit back and enjoy the colourful buildings reflected in the calm waters of the lake.

Things to do in Lavasa

Lavasa combines unadulterated fun with a dash of adventure. Jet skiing and kayaking are in vogue on the lake, while the hills surrounding the town beckon trekkers and mountain bikers. For those who like it easy, the nature trails around town provide breathtaking vistas of valleys and greenery.

The promenade-side cafes and restaurants add to the European flair. Most of these are lake-facing, making them popular spots for a coffee break or a leisurely meal. There are hotels and resorts around the lake that are perfect for short escapes.

Best time to visit and how to reach

The best time to visit is between October and March, when the climate is conducive to enjoying the outdoors. Monsoon rains mean a gentle mist and greenery all around, and the summer is warm but manageable for a short trip.

Lavasa is approximately 57 km from Pune and about 190 km from Mumbai. The easiest way to get there is by road. You can drive there yourself or hire a cab from Pune, which is also the nearest airport and a significant railway station.

Just a short drive into the hills, and you are in this Italian-themed retreat nestled away in western India.
