England captain Ben Stokes will retire from international cricket after the ongoing third Test against New Zealand, bringing an end to one of the most decorated careers in English cricket. The 35-year-old informed his teammates of his decision before the fourth day’s play at Trent Bridge, with the England and Wales Cricket Board later confirming the announcement.

A career filled with defining performances

Stokes has been one of England’s greatest match-winners across formats. He played a key role in England’s 2019 ODI World Cup triumph with his unbeaten 84 in the final against New Zealand and produced one of Test cricket’s finest innings with his memorable Ashes century at Headingley later that year.

The all-rounder finishes his international career with more than 10,000 runs and over 300 wickets across formats. Since taking over as Test captain in 2022, Stokes transformed England’s approach alongside head coach Brendon McCullum, leading the team with an attacking brand of cricket that revived the side’s fortunes.

England bid farewell to a modern-day great

Stokes’ retirement announcement came during the third Test against New Zealand, adding extra significance to the match. Widely regarded as one of England’s finest all-rounders, he has built a legacy through his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations and lead from the front.

His career includes two World Cup titles, unforgettable Ashes performances and a successful stint as England’s Test captain. While injuries have affected him in recent years, Stokes remained one of the team’s most influential figures both on and off the field.

With his retirement, England will lose a player who defined an era with his aggressive mindset, competitive spirit and match-winning ability. As he prepares to play his final international match, Stokes leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the greatest cricketers to represent England.
