Australia's upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh could witness a historic moment as Delhi-born cricketer Nikhil Chaudhary stands on the brink of becoming the first India-born player to represent Australia in more than six decades.

The 30-year-old all-rounder has been drafted into Australia's squad following the withdrawal of opener Travis Head due to personal reasons. Chaudhary's inclusion reflects the growing faith Australian selectors have placed in the leg-spinning all-rounder after his impressive performances in domestic cricket.

From Delhi cricket grounds to Australia's national setup

According to NDTV, Born and raised in Delhi, Chaudhary began his professional cricket journey in India and represented Punjab in domestic limited-overs cricket. During his time in the state setup, he shared the dressing room with notable names such as Harbhajan Singh, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma.

He also spent time around franchise cricket circles in India, including trials with Mumbai Indians and, more recently, involvement with Delhi Capitals.

A visit to Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly altered the course of his career. With international travel disrupted, Chaudhary remained in Australia and pursued opportunities in local cricket, eventually establishing himself in the domestic circuit.

Big Bash performances earn national recognition

According to NDTV, Chaudhary's rise accelerated through his performances for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball caught the attention of national selectors, who had already identified him as a player of interest.

Australia selector Tony Dodemaide said the selection panel had been monitoring Chaudhary for some time and was particularly impressed by his recent BBL performances. The selectors believe his all-round skills could provide valuable balance to the Australian T20 setup.

A chance to create history

According to NDTV, if Chaudhary features in the playing XI against Bangladesh, he will become the first India-born cricketer to play for Australia since Rex Sellers, who represented the country in 1964.

Australia's three-match T20I series against Bangladesh will be played in Chattogram from June 17 to June 21. For Chaudhary, the series presents not only an opportunity to fulfil a personal dream but also to write a unique chapter in cricket history, connecting two of the sport's most passionate cricketing nations through his remarkable journey.
