As India begins their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, a report has claimed that some senior members of the squad have approached BCCI officials directly to seek clarity about their future in the 50-over setup, instead of relying solely on communication through the team management. The development has reportedly added another layer of intrigue to India's long-term planning under head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Questions over ODI roadmap emerge

With the ODI series against Afghanistan marking the start of India's World Cup build-up, uncertainty continues to surround the future roles of experienced players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. A BCCI source told NDTVsports, "With such big players in the team, Gill needs to have a stronger say in the dressing room. Gambhir hasn't got involved in the planning as intently as he has in the other two formats. So far, he has let things take their course."

"Now that the focus has shifted to the preparation for the ODI World Cup, one may expect Gambhir and Gill to take charge and firmly communicate their ideas in the dressing room. It is important that the senior players, who have served India with distinction for so many years, are informed of what role the team expects them to play and the plan for the build-up over the next 16 months," the report further quoted the source as saying.

Gambhir and Gill are expected to take charge

The report further suggests that both Gambhir and ODI captain Shubman Gill may need to play a more proactive role in defining responsibilities within the dressing room. A BCCI source quoted in the report stressed the importance of communicating expectations clearly to senior players who have served Indian cricket with distinction over the years.

With approximately 16 months remaining before the next ODI World Cup, India faces the challenge of balancing experience with transition. The management must decide how veterans fit into plans while also preparing the next generation for a global tournament in South Africa. How Gambhir, Gill, the selectors and senior players align on that vision could play a major role in shaping India's World Cup campaign.
