'Hook shot of highest calibre', says South African commentator as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hits monster six

Through his bold innings, Sooryavanshi highlighted the bright future of Indian cricket

At just 14 years of age, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hit a monster six with his bat that left the South African commentators stunned.

Opening the innings for the Indian team on Monday (January 5), Vaibhav scored 68 runs during the second youth ODI at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. With the chase target of 246 runs, he faced 24 balls and hit 1 four and 10 sixes.

The way this 14-year-old left-hander produced an enigmatic knock left everyone stunned.

The viral moment

The video that went viral, Vaibhav can be seen smacking South India U19 pacer JJ Basson for a six. The moment, captured on the fifth ball of the very first over, took the South African commentator by surprise as he said that "he could not believe his eyes" and that the shot by the young Indian player was of the highest caliber.

"His strike rate is perhaps the most glaring statistic that stands out. I’ve watched a lot of cricket at this particular ground. Ken, that’s the biggest six I’ve seen. And that’s with some much-wanted international names that have graced this particular field. That was the hook shot of the highest calibre," the commentator can be heard saying.

The game

Leading the Under 19 team in the ongoing series, Vaibhav required only 19 balls for the 50-run mark and from just 37 balls, he added 67 runs for the first wicket with Aaron George.

Joining with Vedant Trivedi after George was out, Vaibhav added 28 runs from 12 balls. In this partnership, Vaibhav made 23 runs from six balls.

He was sent back to the pavilion on the ninth over's first ball.

On Monday, India won the second youth ODI by 8 wickets through the DLS method.
