The BCCI is considering an increase in the IPL auction purse, but any decision is expected to be taken with a long-term view of the league’s financial ecosystem. While franchises could receive a higher spending limit in future seasons, the board is reportedly keen on avoiding a sharp rise and instead prefers a gradual, sustainable increase.
The current auction purse for IPL franchises stands at ₹125 crore. Discussions over raising the limit have intensified as player valuations continue to rise and franchise leagues around the world compete for top talent. However, BCCI officials believe player compensation should not be judged solely by auction prices.
According to reports by PTI a BCCI source said, “The team are the custodians of the players. We leave it to them and their understanding with the players. Some players decide IPL over national duty and some vice versa. Our rules are clear unless there is an injury (the two-year ban).”
Focus on sustainable growth
The BCCI is understood to favour a measured increase rather than a dramatic jump in franchise budgets. The board believes a balanced approach will help maintain competitive parity among teams while ensuring long-term stability.

Officials are also mindful of the fluctuating nature of auction values. While some players secure huge contracts in one season, their market value can change significantly in the years that follow. A cautious increase, therefore, is seen as a more practical solution.
Expansion plans add to discussions
The purse hike debate comes at a time when the BCCI is also exploring the possibility of expanding the IPL from 74 matches to 94 matches from 2028 onward. Such an expansion would require a longer tournament window and could further boost the league’s commercial value.

The board is also assessing how franchise cricket fits into the global calendar as T20 leagues continue to grow in prominence. With domestic competitions becoming increasingly influential, administrators are examining ways to balance league commitments with international cricket.
For now, no final decision has been taken, but indications suggest that a higher IPL auction purse remains a strong possibility in the coming years.
