Sarah Taylor has created history in English cricket. The former wicketkeeper has become the first woman to join the coaching staff of England’s senior men’s team. She has been appointed as the fielding coach for England’s upcoming Test series against New Zealand, marking a significant moment in international cricket.

England hand Taylor historic role

Taylor will work with the England men’s side during the three-match Test series against New Zealand starting at Lord’s on June 4. She has been brought in as a temporary replacement for Carl Hopkinson, who is currently involved with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

England director of cricket Rob Key praised Taylor after confirming the appointment. He said the management had been impressed with her coaching methods and described her as one of the best fielding coaches in the game.

Taylor is widely regarded as one of the finest wicketkeepers in women’s cricket history. She represented England in 226 international matches before retiring in 2019. During her career, she won the ODI and T20 World Cups in 2009 and also lifted the 50-over World Cup title again in 2017.

Big step forward for women’s cricket

Since retiring from international cricket, Taylor has steadily built her coaching profile through roles with Sussex, Manchester Originals and the England Lions setup. Her appointment to the senior men’s team is now being seen as a breakthrough for women coaches in professional cricket. Taylor had already become the first female specialist coach for a senior English county men’s side when she joined Sussex in 2021. However, this latest role with the national men’s team takes her achievements to another level.
