India’s T20I team is set for a fresh start, with Shreyas Iyer named captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. The decision marks a major shift in the team’s leadership structure, especially as Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year, has been left out of the squad.

The move signals the selectors’ intent to build towards the next T20 cycle while rewarding players who have consistently delivered both as performers and leaders.

Iyer’s leadership journey pays off

Iyer’s appointment comes after a strong run as captain in domestic and franchise cricket. Over the past few seasons, he has built a reputation as a dependable leader capable of handling pressure and guiding teams deep into tournaments.

Apart from his leadership credentials, Iyer has also been among the most consistent Indian batters in white-ball cricket. His ability to anchor an innings while maintaining a healthy scoring rate has strengthened his place in the national setup.

The selectors appear to have viewed his experience, tactical awareness and recent form as key factors behind the decision. With several senior players being managed carefully ahead of a busy international calendar, Iyer now has the opportunity to establish himself as India’s long-term T20I captain.

Suryakumar’s wait continues

The biggest surprise from the squad announcement was the absence of Suryakumar Yadav. Despite leading India to T20 World Cup success, the experienced batter was overlooked for both the captaincy and a place in the squad.

While the selectors have not indicated that the door is closed on Suryakumar, the decision suggests they are looking at a different direction for the future. The 35-year-old remains one of the format’s most accomplished batters and could still play a role in India’s plans going forward.

For now, however, the spotlight belongs to Iyer. As India prepare for challenging assignments in Ireland and England, the new captain will have the chance to shape the next phase of the team’s T20 journey.
