Director Buchi Babu Sana has addressed the growing criticism surrounding the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor's character in Peddi, saying the makers have taken audience feedback seriously and will make changes to the portions that sparked concern.
The controversy erupted after several viewers accused the film of objectifying Kapoor's character, Achiyamma, and giving her limited agency within the story. The backlash quickly gained momentum on social media, where users questioned both the characterisation and certain scenes involving the female lead.
Director issues statement
In a detailed post on X, Buchi Babu Sana said the team's intention was never to disrespect women or make audiences uncomfortable.

"As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in Peddi and have taken it seriously."
The director added that he has always held women in high regard and acknowledged the concerns being raised by viewers.
"I have always had immense respect for women, both on and off screen, and it was never our intention to objectify or disrespect any female character. If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments, understand the concerns being raised, and sincerely apologise."

Makers to revise scenes
Confirming that changes will be made, Buchi Babu Sana said the team reviewed the feedback before deciding on the revisions.
"After reviewing the feedback, we have decided to make changes to the concerned portions. Cinema grows through its connection with audiences, and as storytellers, we have a responsibility to be mindful of evolving perspectives and sensitivities."
He also reiterated the team's commitment to respectful representation.

What sparked the backlash?
Much of the criticism has focused on Achiyamma's role in the narrative. Several viewers argued that the character primarily serves as an object of desire for male characters rather than playing a meaningful role in the story.
