As anticipation builds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA has unveiled one of the tournament's most recognisable symbols: the official match ball. Named Trionda, the ball reflects the unique identity of a World Cup that will be jointly hosted by three countries for the first time in the competition's history.

The tournament, set to be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, will also be the largest World Cup ever, featuring 48 teams and more than 100 matches. Trionda has been created to capture the spirit of this historic collaboration while incorporating the latest advancements in football technology.

A design that celebrates three nations

According to News 18, the name Trionda translates to "three waves", symbolising the coming together of the tournament's three host countries. Its design incorporates flowing patterns that mimic waves and connect through a distinctive triangular formation at the centre of the ball, representing the partnership between the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A vibrant red, green and blue colour palette serves as a tribute to the host nations, while carefully integrated symbols highlight each country's identity. An eagle represents Mexico, a maple leaf stands for Canada and a star pays homage to the United States.

Gold accents have also been added throughout the design as a nod to the FIFA World Cup trophy, linking the ball to football's ultimate prize.

Engineered for performance on the biggest stage

According to News 18, beyond its visual appeal, Trionda has been developed with performance in mind. The ball features a four-panel construction with deep seams designed to improve aerodynamic stability during flight.

According to FIFA, the structure helps generate balanced drag as the ball moves through the air, making its trajectory more predictable for players and goalkeepers. The surface also includes embossed details that improve grip and control, particularly in wet or humid conditions that may be encountered across the tournament's diverse venues.

The design aims to deliver consistency whether players are shooting, passing or dribbling under varying weather conditions.

Smart technology returns to the World Cup

According to News 18, one of Trionda's most significant features is the return of connected ball technology. Embedded inside the ball is a high-precision 500Hz motion sensor capable of capturing detailed movement data in real time.

The system continuously transmits information to match officials and the video assistant referee setup, helping improve the accuracy of key decisions. The technology is expected to play a particularly important role in offside reviews and other close calls during matches.
