Over decades, some of the greatest icons in world football have stepped into this magical city, leaving behind unforgettable memories and strengthening Kolkata’s global football identity. Here is a list of the six global football icons who have visited the city.

1. Pelé - In September 1977, the Brazilian maestro Pelé visited Kolkata while playing for the New York Cosmos. He faced Mohun Bagan at Eden Gardens in front of a massive crowd of over 80,000 fans. Effortless dribbling and Pele’s charisma created an unforgettable memory. His visit helped Kolkata put its name on the global football map.
2. Diego Maradona- Diego Maradona stepped in Kolkata twice; his relationship with Kolkata is deep and emotional. His first visit in December 2008 drew a huge crowd. Nearly a decade later, in December 2017, Maradona returned to the city, engaging with fans, playing charity football, and interacting with local children.
3. Lionel Messi - Lionel Messi visited Kolkata in August 2011 for the Argentina vs Venezuela international friendly at Salt Lake Stadium. A huge amount of audience, nearly 85,000, roared the name of Messi. From his classic dribbles to aura, he created a short-term festival in Kolkata.
4. Oliver Kahn - Oliver Kahn, the legendary German goalkeeper, visited Kolkata in May 2008 to play his final match for Bayern Munich against Mohun Bagan. Fans filled Salt Lake Stadium to bid an emotional farewell to "Der Titan." Kahn was astounded by the crowd's enthusiasm and later characterised the Kolkata audience as one of the most memorable he had ever encountered in his career.

5. Roberto Carlos- During the 2014 ISL season, Roberto Carlos visited Kolkata as the marquee player-coach of the Delhi Dynamos. The Brazilian free-kick king fascinated fans with his powerful shots and spectacular goals. Even his training sessions drew large crowds, and his presence introduced the city to global football excellence, inspiring the next generation of Indian footballers.
6. Ronaldinho- During the Durga Puja celebrations in October 2023, Ronaldinho came to Kolkata. He interacted with young players, opened football academies, and entertained audiences with his personality and trademark smile.
In 2025, Satadru Dutta took the initiative to bring Messi to India and named it the G.O.A.T. India tour and is planning to bring Ronaldo as his final project.
