Football is often remembered for goals, results, and upsets, but sometimes the most powerful moments come after the final whistle. At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Japan national football team won global admiration not only for stunning wins over giants but also for the conduct of their supporters. Four years later, a similar act of sportsmanship has resurfaced at the Africa Cup of Nations, this time led by Senegal national football team fans, though with far less global attention.

Japan’s supporters set a global example

Japan created one of the biggest surprises at the 2022 World Cup by defeating Spain and Germany in the group stage. Beyond their on-field discipline and tactical brilliance, Japanese supporters captured hearts worldwide.

After the famous win over Germany at Khalifa International Stadium, fans stayed back even after rival supporters had left. They calmly collected leftover food packets, bottles, and waste into blue disposable bags and cleaned the stands. Supporters later explained that this was not a publicity act, but a reflection of everyday Japanese culture, where cleanliness is a shared responsibility.

Images and videos of the gesture went viral, with global media hailing it as an example of football culture at its best.

Senegal fans repeat the gesture at AFCON

At the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, Senegalese supporters quietly recreated the same scene. On December 27, Senegal faced the DR Congo national football team in a group-stage match that ended 1–1, with Sadio Mané scoring for Senegal.

After the match, several Senegal fans remained in the stadium, filling black garbage bags with litter left behind in the stands. A short video of the act spread rapidly on social media, drawing comparisons with Japan’s World Cup supporters. Many football fans pointed out that Senegal’s supporters deserved the same recognition and praise.

Senegal’s campaign on the pitch

On the footballing front, Senegal has backed up that spirit with strong performances. After advancing from the group stage, they defeated Sudan 3–1 in the Round of 16. Papa Gueye scored twice, while Ibrahim Mbaye added another. Senegal is set to face Mali in the quarter-final on January 9.

Japan’s supporters were rightly celebrated in 2022, but Senegal’s fans have shown that respect for the game transcends borders. In a sport often dominated by rivalries and controversy, such moments remind the world what football culture should truly represent.
