The Gabonese government has taken a strict and unprecedented decision following the national football team’s disappointing outing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. After a winless campaign and an early group-stage exit, authorities ordered the suspension of the senior men’s team, blaming poor discipline, commitment issues, and overall failure to meet national expectations.

Winless AFCON campaign

Gabon entered the tournament hoping to compete strongly, but failed to deliver on the field. The team lost all three of its group-stage matches and finished without a single point. Narrow defeats against Cameroon and Mozambique were followed by a particularly painful loss to the Ivory Coast, where Gabon squandered a two-goal advantage. The performances drew sharp criticism from fans, former players, and officials back home.

Government steps in

In response to the poor results, the acting sports minister addressed the nation on television and described the team’s showing as unacceptable and damaging to the country’s sporting image. The government announced the indefinite suspension of the national team, meaning all activities have been halted until further notice. This move was presented as a necessary step to restore discipline and accountability.

Coaching staff dismissed

Along with suspending the team, the government dissolved the entire coaching and technical staff. Officials stated that a complete overhaul was required, arguing that responsibility for the failure did not lie with players alone but also with those managing and preparing the team.

Senior players dropped

The decision also affected experienced players. Several senior figures, including the long-serving captain, were excluded from future selection. Authorities suggested that relying on the same core group had not produced results and that a new direction was needed for Gabonese football.

Uncertain future ahead

The announcement briefly disappeared from state television platforms, raising questions about internal discussions and possible pressure from football authorities. Meanwhile, concerns remain over potential international repercussions, as global football regulations discourage direct government interference. For now, Gabon’s football future remains uncertain, with supporters waiting to see how the sport will be rebuilt after a deeply disappointing continental campaign.
