Matthijs de Ligt remains in a frustrating state of uncertainty as his injury absence from Manchester United stretches beyond four months. While teammates like Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire returned to the squad and even travelled for team commitments, De Ligt has been left behind, continuing his recovery alone in Manchester.

A different kind of injury battle

Unlike straightforward muscle injuries that come with clear recovery timelines, De Ligt is dealing with a persistent back problem. This type of issue brings unpredictability, where progress can vary day by day. At times, the defender has been close to returning to training, even stepping “onto the grass” during certain phases. However, consistency remains the biggest hurdle. On some days, he can train, while on others, discomfort prevents any progress.

Setback without being a setback

The situation has not officially been labelled a setback, but the lack of a defined return date has complicated planning for both player and club. Interim boss Michael Carrick must wait until De Ligt’s body can withstand the physical demands of Premier League football. This uncertainty contrasts sharply with teammates recovering from muscle injuries, where timelines are more predictable and reintegration into the squad can be planned.

Long wait since November

De Ligt has not featured since United’s win over Crystal Palace on November 30. Initial assessments had suggested a minor issue, with expectations of a quick return. Even former manager Ruben Amorim had described the injury as a “small thing” at the time. However, the problem has proven far more complex than first thought.

A test of patience

For a player who had been one of United’s standout performers earlier in the season, the prolonged absence is a major setback. The focus now remains on cautious recovery rather than rushing back, as any premature return could worsen the issue. For De Ligt, the challenge is no longer just recovery but regaining rhythm, fitness and confidence once he finally steps back onto the pitch.
